Equine Rescue Volunteer CertificationThe course content will be Equine Seizure/Surrender/Abandonment. At the end of the six classes the participants will understand and be able to identify proper healthcare for a rescue horse. This includes Body Scoring, Vital Signs, Nutrition, Common Illnesses and Diseases, Pregnant Mares, etc. Students will also be knowledgeable on the Standard Operating Procedures of the Equine Rescue League. This information is extremely valuable in understanding the boundaries and expectations of an Equine Rescue Volunteer. There will be two classes per year beginning in January 2007. Each class meets 4 days: the winter class over two weekends, and the summer class for four consecutive days including one weekend. From the Farrier’s perspective, attendees will learn how to properly clean the hoof, as well as treat and identify common hoof diseases. He will also review basic hoof trimming and common lameness issues to be aware of. Students will learn the basic handling of a horse under possible intense and emotional environments. The focus is on safety for the horse and the volunteer. The remaining part of the course will be focused on Facility and Pasture Management, Pest Control, and Trailer Safety. Awareness and understanding of different types of forage and usefulness will be covered in this session. The types of fencing appropriate to keep horse safe will also be covered in this session.
